VCM Editor vs VCM Scanner — two different jobs

HP Tuners ships two applications. VCM Editor is where you open a tune file (.hpt), see the calibration tables — spark, fuel, MAF, injectors, VCT, shift points — and make changes. VCM Scanner is the datalogging tool: it streams live data from the vehicle (fuel trims, knock retard, commanded vs actual AFR, cam position, IAT) so you can see what your changes actually did. You edit in Editor, you verify in Scanner, and you go back and forth between them.

Beginners often try to tune blind — editing tables in Editor without ever logging in Scanner to confirm the result. That's backwards. The whole craft is the loop: change one thing in Editor, log it in Scanner, evaluate, repeat. TuneVault reads screenshots from BOTH programs — your Editor tables and your Scanner logs — so it can tell you not just what to change but whether your last change worked.

Credits, licensing, and VIN locking

HP Tuners uses a credit system. Your MPVI interface comes with a pool of credits; reading a vehicle is free, but writing a tune to a new VIN consumes credits to license that vehicle to your interface. Once a vehicle is licensed (typically 2 credits, and 4 to unlock certain features depending on the platform/OS), you can write to it unlimited times for free. Credits are consumed per VIN, not per flash — so licensing your own car once is cheap; tuning many different cars is what costs.

This trips up first-timers who panic about "using credits every flash." You don't — you license a VIN once. TuneVault reminds you to confirm your credit balance and that the target vehicle is supported before you start, so you're not stranded mid-project. MPVI3 vs MPVI4 — the interface

The MPVI is the physical dongle that plugs into your OBD-II port and bridges your laptop to the vehicle. The MPVI3 added Bluetooth/Wi-Fi, onboard standalone logging, and an SD card slot; the newer MPVI4 builds on that with more onboard storage and faster connectivity. Either works for the core read-edit-write-log workflow — the headline upgrades are wireless and standalone logging convenience, not fundamentally different tuning capability for most users.

What matters more than the interface generation is keeping firmware current and your laptop's connection stable during a write — a dropped connection mid-flash is the nightmare scenario. TuneVault's beginner workflow stresses a charged laptop, a battery maintainer on the car, and never interrupting a write. The hardware is the easy part; the discipline around the write is what protects you.

Reading, editing, and writing safely

The fundamental cycle: READ the vehicle's current calibration into a .hpt file and SAVE it untouched (this is your stock backup — do this before anything else, every time). EDIT a copy in VCM Editor. WRITE the modified file back to the PCM. LOG the result in VCM Scanner. A write typically does a calibration-only flash (fast) or a full flash; the editor warns you which. Keep the engine off and battery voltage stable during a write.

The cardinal rule is reversibility: because you saved the stock file, you can always flash back to factory. Never make ten changes at once — you won't know which one caused the problem. A safe first project isn't "add 50 horsepower." Do I burn credits every time I flash my car?

No. Credits license a VIN to your interface one time (commonly 2, plus more to unlock certain features); after that you can write to that same vehicle unlimited times for free. Reading is free. So tuning your own car is cheap — only tuning many different VINs adds up.

What's the difference between VCM Editor and VCM Scanner?

Important — read before you tune
  • TuneVault is a tuning copilot, not a replacement for a professional tuner. For high-boost, forced-induction, or unusual builds, a qualified human tuner is still valuable.
  • No tool can guarantee horsepower. Power depends on your hardware, fuel, altitude, and condition — anything promising a number is selling you something.
  • You are responsible for what you flash. You make the changes and write them to your ECU; the outcome is yours.
  • Commanded AFR is not delivered AFR. Always verify fueling with a wideband before boost, and keep timing conservative for pump gas.
  • Modifying emissions equipment may be restricted where you live. Know your local laws; off-road/competition use only where applicable.
