Buying a Used Modified Car: How to Find Out What Tune Is Loaded Before You Pay
The calibration is the one modification you cannot see, and it is the one that decides whether the engine survives. What to ask, what to read from the car in ten minutes, and which answers should end the viewing.

Every modification on a used performance car is visible except the one that decides whether the engine survives. You can see the intercooler, hear the exhaust and measure the wheels. The calibration is invisible, undocumented, and frequently the thing the seller understands least about their own car.

Why the file matters more than the parts
Hardware is honest. An intercooler is either fitted or it is not, and its condition is inspectable. Software is not, for three reasons.
It is not visible. There is no way to look at an engine bay and know whether the timing table is conservative or ambitious, whether the fuelling targets under load leave margin, or whether the previous owner's tuner understood the fuel system's limits.
It can be wrong for the current hardware. Cars get tuned, then modified again, then partly returned to standard, and the file does not follow. A calibration written for larger injectors on a car that has since had stock injectors refitted is a genuinely dangerous combination, and nothing about the car's appearance reveals it.
It cannot always be undone. If the original calibration was never saved, returning the car to a known state is not a matter of pressing a button. On some platforms the correct original file is straightforward to obtain; on others it is a dealer or specialist job. Either way it is a cost, and it is one the seller avoided.
That third point is the one to hold onto. You are not just buying a tune, you are buying — or failing to buy — the ability to get back to a baseline.
The four questions
Ask these before you drive anywhere. The answers matter less than how confidently they come.
1. Who wrote it? A named tuner or shop is verifiable. "It came like that" or "a guy on a forum" is not. This is not snobbery about who is competent — it is about whether anybody can answer a question about the car later.
2. What hardware was it written for? Then compare that answer against what is actually fitted. A mismatch is the single highest-risk finding in this whole process, and it is common, because parts change hands more often than files get updated.
3. Do you have the stock file? The original read, taken before anything was flashed. A seller who produces it has understood something important about owning a modified car. A seller who has never heard of it has a car with no way home. 4. Do you have any datalogs? Logs are the closest thing to a service history a calibration has. A seller with a handful of pulls showing air-fuel ratio and knock behaviour has been watching the engine. Nobody keeps logs of a car they were abusing.
Two "no" answers to questions three and four does not mean the car is bad. It means nothing about the calibration can be verified, and the price should reflect the unknown rather than the seller's description.
What you can read from the car in ten minutes
With a scan tool — yours, or a friend's, or a mobile inspector's — the car itself will answer several questions the seller may not be able to.

Three of those deserve a comment.
The reflash counter is the closest thing to an honest answer the car can give. Many controllers keep a count of how many times they have been reprogrammed, and it does not care what the advert says. Readiness monitors all showing incomplete means the fault memory was cleared within the last few dozen miles. There is an innocent explanation — a battery disconnection — and a less innocent one. Either way it means any fault the car had recently is invisible to you right now, and it is worth asking directly rather than inferring. It also means the car cannot pass an OBD-based emissions inspection today, which matters if you plan to register it promptly.
Knock activity on the test drive is the single most informative live measurement. An engine repeatedly pulling timing under moderate load is telling you that the calibration is asking for more than the fuel, cooling or mechanical condition can support. The normal ranges for knock retard are worth knowing before you go, because "some activity" is normal and "activity every time you accelerate" is not.
The mismatch problem, in detail
Of everything on this page, the hardware-versus-file mismatch is the finding that most reliably costs money, so it is worth knowing what to look for.
Injectors. A file written for large injectors, running stock ones, commands far too little fuel — a lean condition under exactly the load where lean is least survivable. The reverse produces a car that runs rich, fouls plugs and eventually damages the catalyst. Ask what injectors are fitted, then ask what the tune expects.
Airflow hardware. An intake or airflow sensor change requires the air model to be recalibrated. A car with a different intake from the one the file was written around will have fuelling errors across the range, visible as trims that never settle.
Boost hardware. A calibration written for one turbocharger or pulley combination and running another will command boost targets the hardware either cannot reach or overshoots. Overshoot is the dangerous direction.
Fuel. A tune written for high-octane or high-ethanol fuel, running on regular pump gasoline, is asking for timing the fuel cannot support. If the seller says "it needs 93", believe them and ask whether it has always had it.
The practical version of this check is simple: list the modifications you can see, ask what the tune was written for, and see whether the two lists match. When they do not, you are not looking at a tuned car, you are looking at a car with somebody else's tune on it.
The test drive, specifically for the calibration
Beyond the usual, three things are worth doing deliberately.
A genuine cold start. Arrange to arrive before the car has been run. A cold start reveals startup calibration problems — long cranking, a stumbling first thirty seconds, an unstable cold idle — that vanish once the engine is warm. A seller who has already warmed the car up before you arrive may be being polite, or may not.
Sustained part-throttle cruise. Ten minutes at a steady speed shows whether the car is comfortable in the condition it will spend most of its life in. Surging, hunting or a rough cruise at light load is a real finding.
One firm acceleration, with the scan tool watching. Not a full-throttle pull on a public road, but enough load to see whether the engine pulls timing, whether the mixture holds target, and whether anything gets hot. What you are looking for is stability, not a number.
Pricing what you found
Findings sort into three tiers, and each has an obvious response.
Reprice. No stock file. No datalogs. A tune from someone the seller cannot name. Each of these is a real, quantifiable cost — either sourcing the original file or paying for a fresh, verified calibration on the hardware actually fitted. Investigate before committing. Knock activity under moderate load. Fuel trims a long way from zero. A recently cleared fault memory. None of these is automatically fatal — all of them mean you do not yet know what you are buying.
Walk away. A calibration written for hardware that is not fitted, particularly on the fuelling side. A seller who refuses a scan. An engine that pulls significant timing on an ordinary test drive. These are not negotiating positions; they are the car telling you what the first repair bill will be.
Two things to sort out immediately after buying
If you go ahead, do these in the first week rather than the first year.
Establish a baseline. Read the calibration currently loaded and save it, whether or not it is the file you intend to keep. That read is your reference point for everything you do afterwards, and it is free.
Check where you stand legally. A modified car still has to satisfy the inspection and registration rules where you live, and those vary considerably by state and by vehicle age. How can I tell if a used car has been tuned?

Can I just flash it back to stock after buying it?
Only if a stock file for that exact controller is available, which is not guaranteed. The correct file is specific to the controller's own identifiers, not just the model and year. If the seller did not keep the original read, you may be able to source one, but on some platforms your realistic options are the dealer network or a specialist, and both cost money the purchase price should have reflected.
What are the red flags during a viewing?
A seller who cannot name who wrote the tune. No stock file. Hardware fitted that the tune was demonstrably not written for. A recently cleared fault memory with incomplete readiness monitors. Refusal to allow a scan. Any one of those is a reason to reprice; two or more is a reason to walk away.
Does a tune affect whether the car passes inspection?
